Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey

Hello all! I have an idea for a clothing line for women size 14 - 26 using really beautiful, expensive fabrics, couture finishing techniques, and hand embellishments. Thinner women in urban centers have tons of private labels and boutiques with this stuff, and the expendable income to buy a $300 top - see any high end fashion magazine.

So my question is Do fat women want to spend money on clothes that are highly fashionable, sumptuous, unique and well made? Are fat women hired in positions where they make enough expendable income to merit these purchases, or are they routinely not hired in creative professional fields where this clothing would be appropriate? Is there a market interest?

Any feedback, public or private would be highly appreciated. Thanks! - Eden

p.s. - please do not take offense at the word "fat". I'd prefer not to be euphemistic, and I'm not targeting women who are a size 6 but with big breasts and hips. Plus, I'm a fat girl m'self.

Don't know about you, but I weigh 330lb and LOVE to be physically active - hiking, canoeing, short and long urban walks, ballroom dancing, club dancing, playing tennis, playing volleyball, going to the gym, you name it! Now that summer is officially here, I'm ready to go out and have some active fun - at a pace that won't kill me. LOL But that pace is usually boring to the very fit people in my life!!! So, I've been venturing out on my own...but you know? It’s always nicer if it's also a social event! That's where you come in! :-)

Care to join me? Drop me a line; tell me a bit about why you want to join the group!

PLEASE NOTE - This is NOT a weight-loss group. Our focus as a group is to connect with other fat people who have, or who desire to have, a more physically active social life. Some of us, individually, might be on a path of losing weight and may have chosen to eat in a particular way but we are NOT, as a group, a weight-loss or diet group. This is NOT an anti-dieting list either. Some of us might be staunch anti-dieters and fat-activists but this is NOT an anti-dieting list. Some of us could very well be both fat-positive and actively working on dropping weight and eating in a particular way and see no contradiction inherent in that way of thinking. Regardless of where you fall in the complex, muddled soup that is Fat Politics, you are welcomed here as long as you treat everyone with respect, kindness and openness.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: First order of business is a nature hike in the East Bay scheduled for June 11th at 9:00 Am. Other locations to include San Francisco, as well as South and North Bay.

Your ideas and suggestions for activities are welcomed!

Then my cacti will start crying because the days are cooler and shorter then the ones b4. And it will be time to sit out on the porch in the chilly evenings with sweaters on watching the bugs in the street lights getting fewer and fewer. Then our beautiful fall.....The leaves changing on the hill sides, like the entire foot hills of the Appalachia are on fire with orange and yellows and reds. like the native ancestors spirits coming out to make one more war cry before fading away in to the night..The animals will be making there stock piles for winter. The squirrels will be busy burying nuts and large seeds to tide them over on the warm days. The Beautiful buck with its glistening rack in the snow digging out some Little signs that a female has crossed his path. Then my father my 13 year old son and my self wrapping our selves in the many layers to stay warm and topping that all off with a blaze orange cap and vest, hoping to see that monster buck and wishing to out wit him this year.......Yes summer is almost gone but hey, Our lives are only beginning.. Remember its not just a life it is an adventure and living is the greatest adventure of all... Weather you carry a shot gun during hunting season or a camera all year long.

Being overweight is nowhere near as big a killer as the government thought, ranking No. 7 instead of No. 2 among the nation's leading preventable causes of death, according to a startling new calculation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC estimated yesterday that weighing too much acconts for 25,814 deaths a year in the United States. As recently as January, the CDC came up with an estimate 14 times higher: 365,000 deaths.

The new analysis found that obesity -- being extremely overweight -- is indisputibly lethal. But like several recent smaller studies, it found that people who are modestly overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight.

Biostatistician Mary Grace Kovar, a consultant for the University of Chicago's National Opinion REsearch Center in Washington, said "normal" may be set too low for today's population. Also, Americans classified as overweight are eating better, exercising more and managing their blood pressure better than they used to, she said.

The study -- an analysis of mortality rates and body-mass index -- was published in last week's Journal of the American Medical Association.

- AM New York Wednesday, April 20, 2005.

So... it's a start maybe? What I don't get.. is that according to this information people can maintain a healthy blood pressure and be "overweight", and yet they still think that it is "lethal"... Anyway, I know it's a touchy topic... but any thoughts? I was relieved to see some progress in the direction of fat acceptance, even if it is limited.

Anyways, if I win, I get some free stuff. And then I'll go on to some bigger final at the end of the year to win more stuff!! Whee!!

I am a Kaiser member and am looking for a size-positive (or at least not completely negative) doctor in the Kaiser system.

I just got insurance for the first time in awhile and am really intimidated by the medical system. I have a few health issues to deal w/ that I can't continue to ignore, but (like so many other fat folks) I have had such shitty experiences with most medicine that I don't really want to go in.

Ideally s/he would be in Oakland, queer (or queer positive), have a harm reduction approach, and have some experience with women's health issues including PCOS. Honestly though I would be happy to have anyone who doesn't assume all my health issues are about my weight and who doesn't talk down to me (and I am willing to go to both Kaiser SF and Kaiser Richmond for care). Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Thought Id jump in here just to let y’all know that Im glad to know this tribe is here - nice to know there are women out there who do not subscribe to the waifish Hollywood stereotype of beauty. I happen to find heaviness generally more attractive than thinness, but it is just one slice of the pie of what makes attraction. Im not here to oggle or hook up, Im happily married to a beautiful woman who happens to be overweight.

One particular issue Id like to point out (or reiterate, depending on what’s already been discussed) is that weight and health do not always go hand in hand. My wife has a very healthy diet and has committed to a daily discipline of excercise. She has lost over 100 lbs in the process. I find her more attractive than when I met her, not because she takes up less space, but becasue she feels better about herself.

Really, between the aspiring model who is continually inspecting herself in the mirror, and the overweight girl who appears comfortable & confident, Ill be drawn to the latter every time. Before I got married Id dated women of all types, but must admit that I find snuggling less enjoyable if it’s with a skeleton.

So thats it, best wishes to you all. O hell, I cant resist a quick oggle:

Atlantic City hotel and casino says it will fire any cocktail waitress if she gains too much weight.
February 18, 2005: 4:27 PM EST

Atlantic City hotel and casino has a new policy: Fat waitresses are sent packing. CNN's Jack Cafferty reports.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - An Atlantic City casino said its cocktail waitress could lose their jobs if they gain too much weight.

The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa warned its female servers, also known as "Borgata Babes," that they could be suspended from their job if they fail to maintain their sexy figures.

The company told CNN/Money on Friday that the new policy applies to anyone -- including male bartenders -- who gains more than 7 percent of their body weight. But if the weight gain is caused by pregnancy or a medical condition, the company said, the server would be exempt.

"We find this policy to be legal and fair, because the job is defined as a 'performing art' profession at Bogata," Borgata spokesman Michael Facenda told CNN/Money. "Our guests have to come to expect a certain level of service and appearance, and it's our intention to maintain (that image)."

The policy infuriated women's rights advocates, the cocktail servers' union and others, who call the move discriminatory. The cocktail waitress union is also filing a complaint against the new policy. But so far no legal actions have been taken.

Borgata is a joint venture of MGM Mirage (Research) and Boyd Gaming Corp. (Research)

like, goddamnit, there are just some times that i HAVE to sit in a booth at the local diner, ya know? It's visceral or something. So i squeeeeeeeeze my tummy and fat ass in there for the purrrrrrrfect diner experience.....and then laugh and swear as i try to get my ass back out at the end of the meal. Is it me, or are they making the damn tables closer to the benches??!! Granted, i am a gimp as well but still, they so do not make those booths fat friendly--fascists.

Ok, so some days i just think i'm fucking fabulous for having managed to get my ass outta the booth...heh, somebody's gotta.

Something about being fat-tastic is our undeniable sense of physical presence and taking up of space....as a fat woman with a disability it's very easy to feel invisible, nonetheless....but NOT on my fat-tastic days....heh.

My main concern for staying at a voluptuous and natural (yet healthy) weight are the corresponding diseases associated with obesity, to which my fat parents have fallen victim (don't worry, they're ok) (there's also corresponding diseases with being underweight, but I digress). My question is, is it possible to be fit and fat?

yay for all of us for taking care of ourselves - and how I need to take care of myself today is to ask if we can keep ONE (just one, and its a small one at that)tribe free from weight-loss talk.

Sure, there's all kindsa reasons to lose OR gain weight.

Sure, getting less fat doesn't mean you're still not a fatass.

Sure, body image and sex are big issues.

Sure, changing body size and swishy skin are challenges that many fatties face when they change body size (btw, try some honest conversation about the different shapes and textures of your body and what you need from a sex partner in terms of respect, awe, and vigor - works regardless of yer fat/skin ratio)

Sure, you get to "take care of yourself" however the hell you need to - including buying into medical paranoias about the effect of your body weight and size.

Sure, I respect your rights to be whatever damn size you wanna be.

Sure.

But could we PLEASE keep this little, teeny fat tribe a fat positive space?

That means NOT talking about weightloss - of any kind - regardless of your politics and self-identifying as a fatass or a healthier less-fat person.

Start a 'fatasses who lost some and wanna chat about THAT tribe.'

Respect this teeny fat space by only posting messages about finding fat empowerment, fat liberation, fat deviance, and fat revolucion!

well, I guess I might have an opinion on that.

hehe

So...How do you think we can maintain fat-tastic tribe space?

By Gilana

I am a fat girl. Yes, it’s true (and I do admit it). So what? Does that make me unworthwhile? Does that mean you can be a jerk to me? Extra skin does not equal thicker skin. And what makes you think that fat equals ugly? I think I’m damn pretty, and that’s my feeling while I have the yucky self-esteem you’ve given me. I am fat: I am not lazy or dumb or ugly or smelly or slobby or whatever you think fat people must be. I work hard, I’m smart, I’m pretty, I have good hygiene, and…well, ok, my room is a black hole, but other than that, I am not slobby. So what gives you the right to look at my big ass and über-fleshy belly and say that I’m less worthwhile because of them? Where did you get the idea that my more to love is rather more to torment? You don’t seem to mind my tits with all their extra flesh. More to love, baby. Realize it, accept it, and love it. Or at least I’m starting to. When you finally love it, maybe I’ll be able to get over the years of shit you’ve put me through. Love me so I can complete my love for me. Or at least accept me. That would be more than enough. Because I’m very close to loving my body. I just need one last push. More to love. Learn it so I can remember it. More to love.

This I posted a little while ago in another tribe, some of you may have seen it. It is a curve-positive tribe that was, in that one post, seeming fat-negative. This was my feeling.

"See, I've been called fat because I AM fat. I am morbidly obese. And frankly I wish I was seeing things here that made me feel like there were people in this with me, but I'm not. I see people saying "I'm not morbidly obese, so why shouldn't guys like me?" Well, I'm sitting here saying, "I AM morbidly obese. Why shouldn't guys like me?" I'm morbidly obese, I am 5'2" and I weigh 265 pounds, probably more. I wear a size 24-26, depending on the maker and item. I am also quite beautiful. And intelligent. And funny. And loving. So I say fuck you to anyone who looks at my body and says, "I can't see your beautiful face or your wit or your love or your creativity or anything else, because you're a fatty and that's disgusting and therefore you are not worth my time, and you're probably not worth anyone else's either. I'll be going now." The days that I see that, and the days that I see local college kids pointing and laughing when I'm having lunch with my relatively thin father...those are the days that I want to cry, but I can't. Because I have used up the tears on the fact that I'm killing myself as well as the fact that nobody seems to be able to see past my body. I am killing myself and I haven't found a way to stop myself yet. I just want to be loved and cherished for who I am while I live, whether I die young because of what I'm doing to my body or live to be old because I am able to turn this around. I deserve love either way, and fuck you to whoever can't see it. I am morbidly obese. See it, understand it, then forget it and move on to the more important things about ME."
