Fat and Active - a social club for active plus-sized people (and friends) of all ages, genders and sexual orientations. ALL sizes and fitness levels welcomed!
Don't know about you, but I weigh 330lb and LOVE to be physically active - hiking, canoeing, short and long urban walks, ballroom dancing, club dancing, playing tennis, playing volleyball, going to the gym, you name it! Now that summer is officially here, I'm ready to go out and have some active fun - at a pace that won't kill me. LOL But that pace is usually boring to the very fit people in my life!!! So, I've been venturing out on my own...but you know? It’s always nicer if it's also a social event! That's where you come in! :-)
Care to join me? Drop me a line; tell me a bit about why you want to join the group!
PLEASE NOTE - This is NOT a weight-loss group. Our focus as a group is to connect with other fat people who have, or who desire to have, a more physically active social life. Some of us, individually, might be on a path of losing weight and may have chosen to eat in a particular way but we are NOT, as a group, a weight-loss or diet group. This is NOT an anti-dieting list either. Some of us might be staunch anti-dieters and fat-activists but this is NOT an anti-dieting list. Some of us could very well be both fat-positive and actively working on dropping weight and eating in a particular way and see no contradiction inherent in that way of thinking. Regardless of where you fall in the complex, muddled soup that is Fat Politics, you are welcomed here as long as you treat everyone with respect, kindness and openness.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS: First order of business is a nature hike in the East Bay scheduled for June 11th at 9:00 Am. Other locations to include San Francisco, as well as South and North Bay.
Your ideas and suggestions for activities are welcomed!

Re: Fat and Active - a social club for active plus-sized people (and friends)
Wed, June 21, 2006 - 12:55 AMThat is an _extraordinarily_ good idea -- I don't know why this sort of thing isn't more common! Maybe it's because, in modern American society, there's a general assumption that fat people are couch potatoes. I know that I _love_ to walk, especially nature hikes but also urban ones, and I would _love_ to do nature hikes with a bunch of people who would be ok with my speed.
Tell me, did you get much response from your posting? I'm currently in San Francisco but this is temporary, and I'm planning to move back to the East Bay (probably Oakland); I know _I'd_ be interested.
Actively Yours,
Jordan
