Hello all! I have an idea for a clothing line for women size 14 - 26 using really beautiful, expensive fabrics, couture finishing techniques, and hand embellishments. Thinner women in urban centers have tons of private labels and boutiques with this stuff, and the expendable income to buy a $300 top - see any high end fashion magazine.
So my question is Do fat women want to spend money on clothes that are highly fashionable, sumptuous, unique and well made? Are fat women hired in positions where they make enough expendable income to merit these purchases, or are they routinely not hired in creative professional fields where this clothing would be appropriate? Is there a market interest?
Any feedback, public or private would be highly appreciated. Thanks! - Eden
p.s. - please do not take offense at the word "fat". I'd prefer not to be euphemistic, and I'm not targeting women who are a size 6 but with big breasts and hips. Plus, I'm a fat girl m'self.

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Tue, July 19, 2005 - 5:17 PMYou might want to check out the large clothing store on Clement in SF (near 2nd Ave). it's called "go figure" - they have several beautifully made lines of clothes with fabulous fabrics, and they're quite pricey...150 - 300 dollars per item. I only shop in the discount section myself. It seems to me that they do good business.

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 7:05 PMI would drop big cash if the outfit was cut right.
It always struck me odd that all the fashionable clothes are made for girls versus women who are full figured. What is the fashion industry thinking?
- the majority of the female population in America is plus sized
- most women gain weight as they age and become mothers
- women are the ones with the sex lives, not children. Why is the fashion industry trying to pawn mumu's off on us instead of offering modest clothes to the kids and adult ones for the adults?
- the mature woman can afford more clothing than the child or teen.
It irks me like crazy when I go into a store and can't find one sexy dress yet my TEN year old can find dozens and they cost up the wazzoo! The fashion industry is insane... So yes Eden, make a boutique, charge me like mad for a finely cut dress, I WANT to solicit designers who know how to make clothes for the curvy woman. -

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Sat, June 10, 2006 - 5:41 PMDo only women in "creative professional fields" wear clothing to work? Pleez. I spend a good amount of my time and money scouring the internet for better quality plus sized clothing because is not available where I live. Then I drop a chunk of money to have them altered to fit me perfectly. I have a career, a job and a life just like I did when I was a size 8, only better.

Re: Do Fat Women Buy Expensive Clothes? An Informal Survey
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 7:31 AMHi Eden,
I'm new here and I usually lurk awhile but your question goes to exactly the topic that has been on my mind lately so I'm going to throw caution aside and jump in here.
For myself, I would say, emphatically, YES! I may not be able to completely outfit myself at couture prices, but I would LOVE to be able to have one or two fabulous pieces in my wardrobe.
Honestly, I have been so disgusted with the quality, workmanship, and styling of plus size clothing--especially since I "outgrew" the size 22-24 size limits in the department stores--not that the fit was EVER right for me. I spend nearly as much on tailoring as I do on clothing--and I STILL have inferior quality rags at the end.
I'm currently about a 26 -- 28 -- 30 (depending on retailer and cut) so I hope you'll consider raising that upper size limit--I would even tend to think that those of us who wear the larger sizes would probably FLOCK to you--just to get away from the polyester granny clothes the retailers try to foist off on us!
Honestly, I have considered learning to sew but I'm sure that will be a fiasco!
I hope you really do go forward with this idea! Good luck to you! (And please open a shop in Toronto! In Canada we have way less choice than in US.)
